A hard couple of days

Abbie/ August 29, 2020

It had been a really hard few days.  No, more than that.  At times she had thought nothing could get worse and then, as if fate was playing with her, it had.

Tears escaped her eyes that she had been holding in for the past hour.  She hugged herself, pretending her mother was still with her, rocking herself slightly.  Her mother had died many years before but it always felt as though she was still around in times of sadness, to comfort her.

The tears dried and her eyes stared blankly at the far wall as she tried to make sense of it all.

He had been next to useless.  Oh, that was not his fault.  Just nothing he could do really but she would have loved a little bit more support.  He should have stopped it!   He should have……That wasn’t fair either.  He was as hurt as her. She held back a sob as she thought of his hurt face if he knew she was thinking that.  It had not been either of their faults.  It had just happened.

He was waiting for her outside, but she did not want to leave just yet.  Just for now she was alone and things could be as they had been last week.  Just for once she could breathe and rest and think of herself.  She wanted it to be then again.  Why could time not go back and things not have changed?

A small rap on the door broke the spell and she knew it was time.

She put her hand on the doorknob hesitant to open the door to the rest of her life. Then she took a deep breath, turned the knob and walked out to her husband and their surviving week old twin baby girl, to leave for her son’s funeral.
