Today, something twisted inside me. I rarely check the news—it’s too depressing, and I can’t stop the horrors happening—but today, I did. First story: Syrians fleeing their homes. Next: free pancakes in Manchester. Pancakes and death, side by side.
We’re immune now, aren’t we? Bombings, mass graves, murdered children, all nestled next to ads for lip fillers, “duck face” selfies, and recipes for pancakes. We scroll, shake our heads, then make tea before settling in for Corrie or Married at First Sight.
We argue over trivial rubbish online, like why there’s a helicopter out tonight. Honestly, what’s it to you, Karen? TV and the internet are dumbing us down. We flaunt wrinkle-free selfies (thank you, filters), post pics of perfect homes (don’t open the cupboards), and call it life.
I’m sick of it. Yet here I am, still opening the internet, still hoping for change.
